Motion iconicity in prosody

چکیده

Evidence suggests that human non-verbal speech may be rich in iconicity. Here, we report results from two experiments aimed at testing whether perception of increasing and declining f 0 can iconically mapped onto motion events. We presented a sample mixed-nationality participants ( N = 118) with sets videos, where one pictured upward movement the other downward movement. A disyllabic non-sense word prosodically resynthesized as or was simultaneously each video pair, were tasked guessing which videos described. Results indicate prosody is associated motion, such motion-prosody congruent pairings more readily selected than incongruent p < 0.033). However, effect observed our primarily driven by selections words . follow-up experiment native Turkish speaking 92) tested for language-specific metaphor auditory pitch. showed no significant association between motion. Limitations experiment, some implications motor theory perception, “gestural origins” theories language evolution, are discussed.

Phonological iconicity

The arbitrariness of the linguistic sign is a fundamental assumption in modern linguistic theory. In recent years, however, a growing amount of research has investigated the nature of non-arbitrary relations between linguistic sounds and semantics. This review aims at illustrating the amount of findings obtained so far and to organize and evaluate different lines of research dedicated to the is...

Iconicity as structure mapping.

Linguistic and psycholinguistic evidence is presented to support the use of structure-mapping theory as a framework for understanding effects of iconicity on sign language grammar and processing. The existence of structured mappings between phonological form and semantic mental representations has been shown to explain the nature of metaphor and pronominal anaphora in sign languages. With respe...

Arbitrariness, Iconicity, and Systematicity in Language.

The notion that the form of a word bears an arbitrary relation to its meaning accounts only partly for the attested relations between form and meaning in the languages of the world. Recent research suggests a more textured view of vocabulary structure, in which arbitrariness is complemented by iconicity (aspects of form resemble aspects of meaning) and systematicity (statistical regularities in...

Iconicity vs. Systematicity in Artificial Language Learning

A foundational assumption in linguistics has been that words and their meanings are arbitrarily related; however, this position has been challenged recently. Experiments have shown that both systematic (where similar objects have similar labels) and iconic (words ‘resemble’ the objects they label) associations between words and objects facilitate learning. However, these two literatures remain ...

Prosodic Iconicity and Experiential Blending

In order to account for prosodic iconicity in speech in a very general way we propose looking at the phenomenon from an experiential and embodied perspective (Núñez 1999; Violi 2003; Rohrer 2007, i.a.), defining communication as a “co-experienciation” process. Using different paths, prosodic dimensions’ variations impose direct, non-mediated shaping of shared experience. Prosodic iconic formati...
